Norges Bank, the Central Bank of Norway, has announced that the theme of their new banknote series will feature the sea to reflect its importance for Norway’s economy.
Work on the new banknote series, the 8th in total, began in the autumn of 2012. Norges Bank has said that there is a “need to enhance banknote security to ensure that current and future Norwegian banknotes are resistant to counterfeiting”.
The new designs will use the same denominations (50,100,200,500,1000) and main colours as are used within the current 7th series of banknotes. They will also continue to be printed on cotton paper, rather than the growing trend of polymer substrates.
“Finding a theme for the new banknote series has been an extensive and exciting process, with a creative input of ideas from various contributors,” says Trond Eklund, Director of Norges Bank’s Cashier’s Department.
Norges Bank is now launching a design competition to attract a variety of design proposals.
