Determining the correct time to introduce high value coins can be difficult for Central Banks. The decision depends on the coin-handling infrastructure in each country and on macro issues such as inflation and the currency’s purchasing power.

SMI works with Central Banks to determine the position of the coin/ note boundary in their country, which is increasingly influenced by new durable banknote substrates and other technologies such as post-print varnishes.
