The UAE opened its first banknote printing plant, the Oumolat Security Printing LLC, on Saturday 11 March 2017 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai.
The new UAE banknote printing plant is located in the Khalifa Industrial Zone in Abu Dhabi and aims to provide printing services for central banks across the Middle East. Historically, the printing of the country’s dirham currency was outsourced to commercial banknote printers in located in Europe.
At the opening of the plant, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs, presented Sheikh Mohammed with the first Dh1,000 note, bearing the number 1.
The Oumolat printing facility is equipped with, it says, ultra-modern and fully integrated security and protection systems, whilst all machines have the latest integrated technology for banknote inspection and verification.
