Mobile phone operator T-Mobile has begun accepting Bitcoin payments for pay-as-you-go phone top-ups in Poland.
T-Mobile, one of Poland’s leading mobile phone operators, has begun a 3 month trial offering the virtual currency Bitcoin as an alternate payment option in partnership with Polish payments processor InPay.
To help launch this new payment option, T-Mobile is offering a 20 per cent bonus to customers who use Bitcoin to top-up their phones.
T-Mobile is the next large company to accept the Bitcoin virtual currency, following companies such as Dell, Expedia and, just recently, Microsoft.
What is Bitcoin?
Bitcoin is a form of currency, like the US dollar, the euro or Japanese yen, but unlike these currencies, there are no physical banknotes or coins. The Bitcoin currency is a virtual one, directly tied to the internet, and is decentralised as it’s not controlled by any country. Like ordinary currency, bitcoins can be exchanged for goods, services or currency.
