The Reserve Bank of India intends to explore the feasibility of developing a feature to assist those with visual impairments to identify Indian banknotes.
The Reserve Bank announced its intention to focus on features for the visually impaired in its June 2018 Statement on Developmental and Regulation Policies.
Highlighting the advancement in technology in such features, the Bank identifies that
“technological progress has opened up new vistas for making Indian banknotes more recognisable for the visually challenged, facilitating their day to day transactions.”
The Reserve Bank intends to consult with various groups representing the visually impaired to explore the feasibility of developing a device or mechanism to aid them in identifying Indian banknotes. An update is expected to be given in six months.
