The National Bank of Kazakhstan, the country’s central bank, has announced that the new 10,000-tenge banknote (GBP £23, US $29) will go into circulation on 1 December 2016, before a national holiday celebrating the President’s long-standing leadership of the country.

At a conference held yesterday in the Kazakh capital Astana, the National Bank’s chairman said
“All Kazakhstan’s achievements since independence are inextricably linked to the first president of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev,”
President Nazarbayev has been Kazakhstan’s leader since 1989 when he was named First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Kazakh SSR. He was subsequently elected as the first President following the country’s independence from the Soviet Union in December 1991. In April last year, he was re-elected as President with almost 98% of the vote. Consequently, he is known by the title “Father of the Nation” within the country.
