The Reserve Bank of India has announced that it is considering introducing banknote varnish for its latest banknote series.
The Reserve Bank of India’s 2017-18 Annual report, published yesterday, reports that the central bank is exploring the feasibility of increasing the life of Indian banknotes through the use of banknote varnish.
According to the central bank,
“International experience suggests that varnishing of banknotes is expected to increase their life and durability, reduce the banknote replacement requirements and thereby lower the overall security printing expenditure.”
It proposes to introduce varnished banknotes on a field trial basis.
