The Bank of Ghana has issued a 5-cedi banknote to commemorate the Central Bank’s 60th anniversary.
The design of the new banknote continues to use a predominantly blue colour scheme, but incorporates illustrations of Dr. James Kwegyir Aggrey, the famous educationist and missionary who died in 1927.
The banknote includes a number of new security features including an optically variable windowed security thread, visible when the note is tilted.
Intaglio print is used to produce tactile marks shown at each of the short sides of the front of the banknote, and is also used to create the portrait image.
Optically variable ink is used for the denomination and currency symbol at the top left of the note’s front, changing from green to blue when the note is tilted. Similarly, an iridescent stripe is included on the reverse of the note.
The reverse also includes a QR code which is readable using a mobile phone application. When used, it takes the viewer to a page of the Bank of Ghana’s website where the new features of the banknote are displayed.
In addition, the note includes a watermark and ultraviolet security features.
