The National Bank of Georgia has confirmed that it will release an upgraded 5 lari banknote into circulation on 1 September 2017.
It will be the fourth of the Georgian banknote family to be upgraded, following the 20, 50 and 100 lari banknotes circulated in February and November last year.
The new 5 lari banknote continues to use themes from its previous design, including a portrait of Georgian historian Ivane Javakhishvili and an illustration of the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University building.
New security features have been incorporated into the upgrade design including a holographic foil stripe, an optically variable colour changing ink feature, iridescent coating and a windowed security thread. Tactile lines have been added to both short edges of the note to assist those with visual impairments to identify the note’s denomination.
Additionally, the Central Bank advises that the upgraded notes are made with “special materials and security mechanisms that make them robust against contamination and natural wear-and-tear”.

The next denomination of the Georgia banknote family to be upgraded is the 10 lari note, though the Central Bank has yet to confirm when this will occur.
