The 5 lari banknote has now been circulated, following an announcement by the National Bank of Georgia last June.
The upgraded lari banknote will circulate alongside the previous version of the 5-lari note first circulated in 2002.
The new 5 lari banknote continues to use themes from its previous design, including a portrait of Georgian historian Ivane Javakhishvili and an illustration of the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University building.
New security features have been incorporated into the upgrade design including a holographic foil stripe, an optically variable colour changing ink feature, iridescent coating and a windowed security thread. Tactile lines have been added to both short edges of the note to assist those with visual impairments to identify the note’s denomination.
Additionally, the Central Bank advises that the upgraded notes are made with “special materials and security mechanisms that make them robust against contamination and natural wear-and-tear”.
