The Bank of Thailand has issued a new 16th series 500-baht banknote which will be circulated from 12 May 2014.
The design is similar to its previous version – purple is still the predominant colour and it is the same size, 72 x 156 mm.
The note contains new security features to help people authenticate the banknotes during transactions. It also contains features aimed at people with visual impairments to help them differentiate between the notes. The note’s features include:
- Colour-shift ink with latent image
- Watermark
- Hologram foil stripe
- Windowed colour-shift thread with animation
- Iridescent coating
The previous 500-baht banknote, which has been in circulation for the past 12 years, is expected to be replaced by the end of 2016.
The Deputy Governor of the Bank of Thailand said that Thailand has low levels of counterfeits circulating, at 5 to 1 million – lower than US and euro dollars (40 to 1 million).
