The Bank of England has confirmed that the new £5 polymer banknote will be issued in September 2016.
The new banknote will be the first of three new polymer banknotes to be issued by the Bank, consisting of the £5, £10 and £20 banknote denominations.
On the 2nd June full details of the new five pound note, including education material for the public and businesses, will be provided by the Bank including the note’s security features.
The decision to use polymer was made following a public consultation programme held by the Bank of England in between September and November 2013. The results were 87% in favour of the change from traditional paper to polymer banknotes, 6% opposed and 7% neutral.
The £5 polymer banknote will feature Sir Winston Churchill in its design, and the £10 note will feature English novelist Jane Austin.
The £10 note will be issued in 2017 and the £20 note by 2020.
