Following an announcement last November, De La Rue opens its Global Centre of Excellence for Security Print on the European island of Malta.

The Centre was opened last Thursday, 30 March 2017, by The Prime Minister of Malta, Joseph Muscat.

According to De La Rue, it has been designed to “deliver the next generation of Currency, Identity Management and Product Authentication Solutions”.

Speaking at the opening of the Centre of Excellence, De La Rue’s CEO, Martin Sutherland, said:

“Today we launch the High Security Logistics Centre, a new state of the art plate making facility and a new cutting edge technology Polycarbonate Manufacturing Plant which we will launch into full scale production in the coming weeks.”

De La Rue has had a banknote printing plant in Malta for forty years, but in December 2015 the company announced major redundancies at the plant, with reportedly a view of eventually phasing out banknote printing activities within the country. Almost a year later, in November 2016, De La Rue changed this decision, confirming that they would in fact continue providing banknote printing services in Malta. This announcement came two months following the news that Crane Currency planned on setting up its own banknote printing plant in Malta.
