The Bulgarian National Bank has begun issuing its upgraded series of banknotes with the release of the 100 leva note, which began circulating on 28 December 2018.
The design of the latest banknotes continue to use the same themes as the currently circulating banknotes – the 100 leva banknote was first issued in 2003 – but include upgraded security features.

The note continues to have a predominantly green colour scheme and size of 141mm by 79mm.
New security features include a tactile denomination feature aimed at visually impaired people consisting of five thick and six thin lines positioned at the short edges of the banknote.
The holographic foil shown on the front left of the note has been updated, as has the optically variable ink (OVI) feature now used to illustrate the note’s denomination.
A windowed security thread has now been included, seen on the reverse of the note, consisting of a dynamic chess effect visible as the note is turned.
There is also a high resolution halftone image watermark.
