To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Currency Interchangeability Agreement, Brunei Darussalam and Singapore have issued commemorative polymer banknotes.
The Monetary Authorities of both Brunei Darussalam and Singapore have jointly issued a set of two $50 commemorative polymer banknotes at a ceremony held on 5 July 2017.
The Currency Interchangeability Agreement was originally established in 1967 to promote monetary cooperation between the two countries. Under the Agreement, the Monetary Authority of Brunei Darussalam (AMBD) and the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) accept each other’s banknotes and coins and exchange them at par and without charge into their own currency.
One million of the AMBD commemorative banknotes will be available for public exchange, whilst the MAS will exchange two million banknotes of their version. The notes became available on the 7th July.
Both versions of the notes feature the same design elements and layout including the 50th anniversary logo, an illustration of a flower – the Simpur found in Brunei Darussalam and Singapore’s national flower, the Vanda Mis Joaquim, both shown in full bloom to symbolise the “flourishing friendship between the two countries”.
Each note features a clear window incorporating a colour shifting ink feature depicting either Brunei Darussalam’s Istana Nurul Iman or Singapore’s Istana
Both banknotes were jointly designed by Mr Abdul Ajihis Haji Terawih, Mr Eng Siak Loy and Mr Weng Ziyan.
