According to local reports, the Bank of Botswana will issue a polymer version of its 10 pula banknote next February.
The upgraded banknote comes following complaints from the public regarding the poor quality of the paper version currently circulating in the country.
Being the lowest denomination in the Botswana banknote family, it has a high circulation rate and stays in circulation longer than the other denominations.
At a briefing with the media last Monday, the Bank of Botswana governor, Mr Moses Pelaelo, said that the Central Bank had expected the 10 pula note to stay in circulation for around four months, but in reality, it often circulates for double this amount of time due to it being used as a form of change in transactions.
Whilst the design of the banknote is reportedly similar to its paper version, the change to a polymer substrate has provided the Central Bank with the opportunity to include polymer specific security features in its design such as clear windows.
