The Reserve Bank of Australia has today issued its new $5 polymer banknote. It is the first of the new series to be issued, as part of the central bank’s Next Generation Banknote Program.
The $5 note is printed using Innovia Security’s Guardian® polymer substrate and contains a variety of new security features. This includes the first clear edge-to-edge window, according to Innovia Security, which spans from the top to the bottom of the banknote. There is also a tactile feature consisting of two dots to assist those with visual impairments to identify the note’s denomination, alongside large contrasting numerals and varying sizes of the notes within the series. There are a variety of other dynamic security features which can be seen when the banknote is tilted.

The notes of the new series will all contain security features with designs including different species of wattle (Acacia – an iconic component of the Australian bush) and a native bird. The $5 banknote features the Prickly Moses wattle and the Eastern Spinebill.
The Reserve Bank of Australia is running an education campaign to ensure the public are aware of the banknote’s new security features, including a new “RBA Banknotes” smartphone app available from Apple’s App store and Google Play.
