Following the introduction of a new high denomination 500-peso banknote in June of this year, the Banco Central de la República Argentina has introduced a new 200-peso paper banknote within the indigenous animal series.

The design of the note, which is a new denomination within the Argentinian currency structure, is predominantly blue in colour and features illustrations of the Southern Right Whale. The front of the note is designed in portrait format, whereas the reverse of the note is in the more traditional landscape mode.

The note’s main security features include a watermark featuring the Southern Right Whale and the denomination numerals in highlights. A wide windowed colour-shift security thread is also included, as is a latent image, optically variable ink for the denominational value, a see through feature, microtext, ultraviolet features and tactile features to assist those with visual impairments.

The remaining denominations from the new banknote family, the $1,000, $100, $50 and $20 are expected to be issued during 2017 and 2018.

The $2, $5 and $10 banknotes from the previous series will be coined in line with the $1 coin, and are expected to begin circulating next year.
