The Central Bank of Argentina has issued the next denomination from its new “Native Animals of Argentina” series of banknotes, the 20-peso.
The new note, which entered circulation on the 4 October, features the native guanaco – a llama type animal – as part of the currency series’ efforts to raise awareness of the preservation of the environment.
The new 20-peso banknote is the lowest denomination banknote of the new series. It continues to use a predominantly red colour scheme and retains the same dimensions of 155mm by 65mm.
The obverse of the note has been designed vertically, similar to the 500 and 200 peso denominations of the latest Native Animals of Argentina family, issued in June and October 2016 respectively. A portrait of the guanaco is displayed alongside ornamental flowers.
The design on the reverse of the note is in the traditional horizontal format, and includes an illustration of the guanaco’s characteristic habitat.

Changing the denomination structure
With the new Native Animal series comes a change in the denomination structure of the country’s currency. Argentina has seen a volatile economy in recent years which has attributed to high inflation in the country. Previously, the highest value banknote was the 100-peso but, being valued at around US $5.50, there were reports of a cash crisis in the country, with many ATMs regularly running out of cash due to the high demand.
Consequently, the Central Bank of Argentina planned a new currency series which included higher value banknotes. The Native Animals of Argentina banknote series, which is being gradually issued, consists of the
- New high value 1,000-peso, due to be issued during 2018
- New high value 500-peso, issued June 2016
- New high value 200-peso, issued October 2016
- 100-peso, to be issued in 2018
- 50-peso, to be issued in 2018
- 20-peso, issued October 2017
