The Reserve Bank of India has revealed the design of the new ₹50 banknote denomination, part of the new Mahatma Gandhi Series.
The new banknote denomination features a portrait of Mahatma Gandhi on the front of the note and an illustration of the Stone Chariot – a shrine dedicated to Gandhi which stands in the Indian village of Hampi, Karnataka, a UNESCO World Heritage Site – is shown on the reverse.

Instead of the pink/ purple colour shades of the previous ₹50, the predominant colour of the new banknote design is fluorescent blue. It is also slightly smaller in size, being 66mm by 135mm.
Security features include:
- a see through register
- microlettering
- a windowed demetallised security thread, approximately 2mm width
- electrotype watermarks
The RBI has confirmed that the ₹50 (US$7.80) banknote denomination from the previous series will continue to be legal tender.
