The Central Bank of Uzbekistan is set to issue a new high value 50,000-soum banknote denomination, to begin circulating on August 22, 2017.
According to the Central Bank, the new 50,000-soums (US$12) denomination has been introduced due to the increasing average wage in the country, aiding citizens to “pay salaries, pensions and benefits as well as to make cash calculations.” Additionally, it says the higher value banknote will help to reduce cash flows and minimise the associated costs associated with the transportation, delivery and storage of cash.
This follows the addition of another high value 10,000-soum denomination issued earlier this year.
The new note joins the UZS 25, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1,000, 5,000 and 10,000 denominations in the current banknote series.

The new paper banknote is predominantly purple in colour, and is 144mm by 78mm – the same dimensions as the other five higher value denominations in the series.
Security features include:
- a 4mm windowed security thread with “3D effect”, reportedly MOTION™ thread by Crane Currency
- colour changing ink used to display the numerals “50000” changing from bronze to green when the banknote is tilted

- see through register
