Swaziland changes 10-lilangeni banknote to avoid SA confusion

Confusion between the Swaziland 10-lilangeni and the South African 100-rand banknotes has led to the Central Bank of Swaziland issuing a green version of the note.

The confusion between the similar coloured banknote denominations have occurred due to the South African currency also being accepted in Swaziland.

The Lilangeni currency was introduced in 1974 replacing the South African currency at par and has remained at par since. The rand has continued to be an accepted currency in the country.

The blue version of the 10-lilangeni banknote began circulating in 2011.

The Central Bank reportedly began issuing the green version of the banknote on 24 July 2017. As well as colour, the note also differs from its preceding version with the addition of the words “VISION 2022”, referring to the country’s vision to be a First World nation by 2022.
