The new polymer banknote is part of the Ran Dhihafaheh note series which launched on 1 November 2016 and circulated on 26 January 2016, consisting of the 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1,000 denominations.
The new polymer 5 replaces the last 5 Rufiyaa banknote, issued in 1983 and made with a cotton paper substrate.
Whilst not yet confirmed, it is assumed that the new 5 Rufiyaa banknote uses Safeguard® polymer substrate, as per the remaining denominations of the Ran Dhihafaheh banknote series.
The new 5 Rufiyaa banknote is expected to be issued into circulation during July this year.
