The Royal Bank of Scotland’s first polymer banknote entered circulation today, following the trend set by other Scottish issuing authorities, the Bank of Scotland and Clydesdale Bank.
The design of the new note was announced in April earlier this year. It features Scottish poet Nan Shepherd and is the first of the new “Fabric of Nature” banknote series, and includes mackeral fish in recognition of their importance as the single most valuable species for the Scottish fishing industry.

The new polymer banknote uses De La Rue‘s Safeguard® substrate and includes a variety of modern security features to reduce the risk of counterfeiting. These include De LA Rue’s SPARK® Orbital™ feature in green, made with SICPA’s optically variable ink called SPARK®. This is positioned in the clear window and is visible from both sides of the note.
Commenting on the launch of the new banknote, Chairman of RBS Scotland said
