The Bermudan Monetary Authority (BMA) is reminding the public that the legacy, horizontal Bermuda banknotes will no longer be legal tender after 31st December 2013.
A press release issued by the Bermuda Monetary Authority included an explanation from Shanna Lespere, Director of Operations:
“Back in June, the Authority announced that the legacy banknote series will no longer be legal tender after 31st December 2013. So the deadline is fast approaching. We have successfully been reducing circulation of these notes since that time, in conjunction with Bermuda’s banks. We strongly encourage everyone to visit their bank to exchange any legacy banknotes they may still have.”
The new banknote designs were originally introduced by the BMA in 2008 and started to be issued in 2009. The $2 note design was chosen by the International Bank Note Society (IBNS) as the “Banknote of 2009” – each year the IBNS recognises an exceptional banknote issued each year.
