The Central Bank of the Bahamas has chosen to use Landqart’s Durasafe® banknote substrate for the two highest value notes of its new “Crisp Evolution” banknote series.
Landqart is expected to begin sending shipments in 2018 for the $50 and $100 banknote denominations.
Durasafe® is a composite paper-polymer-paper substrate developed by Landqart in cooperation with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich. It consists of a central core of transparent polymer and two outer layers of cotton banknote paper all fused together. The combination of paper and polymer allows a wide range of security features to be included, from traditional watermarks, security fibres and threads to modern polymer features such as see-through windows. Durasafe® also provides improved banknote durability due to its polymer core.
Speaking of the announcement, Landqart CEO Axel Wappler said:
“The choice of Durasafe® by the Central Bank of the Bahamas for its high denomination banknotes reflects the desire of this Central Bank to be at the forefront of currency technology and design, and underscores the superior capabilities of the Durasafe® substrate. We are delighted to have secured another customer for Durasafe® as we continue to expand our market share. With the announcement in March of Durasafe® shipments for a new customer in 2017, the Swiss 20 Franc note entering circulation in May, and the Swiss 50 Franc note winning two prestigious, international awards, we are building good momentum for this product.”
The Bahamas will be the fourth country known to use Landqart’s substrate in banknotes, following Morocco, Kazakhstan and Switzerland.
The Central Bank of the Bahamas launched its CRISP (Counterfeit Resistant Integrated Security Product) family of banknotes on 3 August 2005, beginning with the $10 note. The remaining denominations were issued during the following four years, consisting of the $1, $5, $20, $50 and $100.
